stadslicht/hoofdlicht?

hi,
I have a 504 coupe and I wonder if anyone can explain the 3 settings for the lights? I think mine are wired wrong. First click forward gives no lights, 2nd click down gives outside 'stadslicht' and 3rd click back gives 'hoofdlicht' only.
Is this the right configuration? as the manual says '1-stadslicht, 2 dim, 3-hoofd' which doesn't explain it very well.

Steve, what do you mean with "hoofdlicht" in this case?
Is this the normal light you use during night? If yes, this is what we call "dimlicht".
"Hooflicht", also known as "grootlicht", is only used when there is no chance to blind other people on the road.

If I follow your explanation, the second stage (normal lights) is missing.
You say the manual says the following:

Hallo Steve,

You are correct in your conclusion that the connections in your lightswitch are wired incorrectly.

First click must give the "stadslicht" (citylight or parkinglights). (parking)
Second click must give the dimmed bright headlights . (low)
Third click must give the undimmed or bright headlights. (high)

So all wirings must be rearranged by one click in reverse.

But, if your discription of "hoofdlicht only" means the undimmed bright headlights, only the first and second click must be refitted by one step in reverse.

hi, by 'hoofdlicht' I mean 'grootlicht' (main beam), the problem is my interior/dash lights do not work, but I presume they should go on with the first setting but shouldn't the two outside headlights also come on with this setting?

hi, just read through your mail again and it makes sense.... the trouble is I'm a novice with electrics so I don't know what you mean by 'reverse'?

Hallo Steve,

By reverse I mean the following.

Lights connected to second click (stadslicht) must be fitted to the first click.

Lights connected to the third click( if these are the dimmed main / dimmed bright lights) must be fitted to the second click.
If these are the undimmed main lights leave them where they are (third click) and search for the unconnected wires of the dimmed main light.

The lights of the dash must go on at the first click and stay on olso in the second and third position.
If they don't go on the reason can be:
- the bulbs are defective
- fuse is blown
- or the dash lights are not connected at all or wire has been broken.

ok, I see what you mean. I find some time soon and have a look at the steering column switches and see if I can figure it out. It's not the fuse or the bulbs, the circuit goes - dashboard, clock, heater, ashtray and gearlever (automatic) and they all have an earth. So the problem must be the switch I guess.
Thanks for the advice, I'll let you know how it goes.

hi, I checked the connections, everything seems ok so the problem is further down the chain somewhere, I tested as far as I know how. Last week the rear lights stopped working (though the brake lights work). Anyway, I think I'm going to have to take it to garage. Thanks for the advice and I am a little wiser for it.

May be it's an idea to ask on this Forum if anyone has a wiring diagram for the electrical system of your car.

Specify the type (504 SR/GR etc.), engine-type and year of manufacture.
I think and hope that someone of the Forum wil help you.

Probabely its better to open a new topic fort this search.
E.g. Who can Help me with a wiring diagram 504?
And then specify the car for which it is needed

It's easier to trace your system where, may be, it is wrongly connected if you have a wiring diagram.
